Mozart’s Requiem and Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross: two works with obvious connections, beginning with their shared roots in the space between a dialogue between the human and the divine, between life and death, between heaven and earth. Perhaps because these two composers held each other in mutual admiration, it was with this same spirit that the Debussy Quartet sought to conceive this project.
Though never performed together before, the connection is immediately apparent upon listening: so close in their message, yet so different and complementary in their composition. The result of this collaboration is astonishing: two incredible scenes, four artists on stage, four distinct presences, and above all, four solitudes that become one with the music. Candlelight that feels like a new challenge, woven from shadows and flashes of light, from encounters and isolation—much like the music itself. In a space that is at once simple and meticulously crafted, the four musicians accord every breath, every glance, every moment of tension the full importance demanded by
the rigors of sacred music.
