The chapel was founded in 1756 by the residents of the villages of Chamonix and Barey. Its architecture closely resembles that of earlier buildings.

Inside, a white marble plaque commemorates the generosity of the Coudray family, who emigrated to Germany. In the 1750s, they notably donated a statuette of the Black Madonna (a perfect replica of the Black Madonna of Our Lady of Altötting, a Bavarian shrine) and another depicting the Virgin Mary with Christ taken down from the Cross (1757).
