Feydeau invites us on a hunting expedition—in every sense of the word—in this biting vaudeville. The formula is familiar but always effective: few characters but a maximum of hilarious, farcical situations. Taking advantage of his friend Duchotel’s departure on a hunting trip, Moricet begins to court Duchotel’s wife, Léontine. She initially resists, only to discover that she herself is being cheated on... Everyone then ends up at the same address under the countess’s roof: 40 Rue d’Athènes… *Monsieur chasse* is the vaudeville of all vaudevilles that made its author famous; it was, in fact, Feydeau’s own favorite play. It features a whirlwind of impossible situations involving husbands, wives, mistresses, lovers, and neighbors… which earned Feydeau—unmatched in this art—the titles “engineer of laughter” and “genius clockmaker.”
