Lionel, a talented young singer from Kentucky, grew up listening to the songs his father used to sing on the front steps of their house.
In 1917, he left the family farm to enrol at the Boston Conservatory, where he met David, a composition student as brilliant as he was charming, but their budding relationship was brutally cut short when David was called up at the end of the war. In 1920, reunited for a single winter, Lionel and David travelled through the forests and islands of Maine to collect and preserve folk songs threatened with oblivion. This interlude would leave an indelible mark on Lionel. Over the following decades, Lionel found recognition, success, and other love affairs during his travels across Europe. But his memories of David still haunt him, until the day a trace of their joint work resurfaces and reveals to him just how much that relationship resonated more deeply than any other.
