While the Italian occupation was not marked by major acts of violence, the German occupation left behind memories of dramatic events:
- The abduction of the "Canadiennes" at the Mino brewery.
- The Tom Morel incident in front of the Sainte-Famille building in January 1944.
- The major roundup on March 2, 1944—a market day—and the arrest of Jean Moënne.
- The events at Les Glières and their tragic aftermath.
The toll on the Pays Rochois was heavy, a fact reflected in the overcrowded war memorial in La Roche-sur-Foron.
