Description

The glacial origin of Lac des Chambres ensures that its water is clear and crystal-clear. In the spring, depending on snow conditions, patches of ice may remain on its surface. A refreshing dip is guaranteed, but swimming is prohibited.
The ancients called the numerous chasms and underground cavities that characterize the surrounding landscape “chambres.” Why is swimming prohibited in mountain lakes? To protect extremely fragile high-altitude ecosystems. Environmental impacts such as chemical pollution (the release of sunscreen, oils, and cosmetics that degrade the quality of stagnant water), the degradation of shorelines (trampling causing bank erosion and the destruction of aquatic microflora), and disturbance of wildlife (disruption of species and the spawning grounds of fish or amphibians by stirring up bottom sediments) cause irreversible damage.
