“Girls in pink, boys in blue!” “Soccer is a boys’ sport!” Preconceived notions and stereotypes are still hard to shake. And picture books and other children’s books, filled with pretty princesses and valiant superheroes, are no exception when it comes to perpetuating these preconceived notions. Fortunately, many authors and illustrators today have had the good sense to break the mold and offer children other possibilities. Actresses Dominique Chevaucher and Bénédicte Lafond joyfully and convincingly bring to life these children’s books that deconstruct traditional representations. Read in two voices and with four hands, interspersed with scenes of improv or object theater, the books waltz across the stage—and so do the prejudices. It’s funny, fresh, and so necessary!
