For this year’s European Heritage Days, Aulps Abbey is offering a wide-ranging programme of tours and talks.
THE PROGRAMME:
- OUT-OF-THE-WALLS TOUR ‘From the Abbey to Bas Thex’ – Saturday 19 September, 11.00–12.30
Set off to explore Bas Thex, a traditional and well-preserved hamlet just a stone’s throw from the abbey. Passing by old farmhouses, granaries, oratories and a chapel, this journey into the past will take you to the oratory of the illustrious Saint Guérin.

- TALK: ‘Trouble in the Pastures’ – Saturday 19 September at 5.00 pm
As part of the International Year of Pastoralism and Pastures, Arnaud Delerce, PhD in History, will give a talk on conflicts over land use in the mountains of medieval Chablais.
Suitable for ages 12 and over.
- TOUR of the Jardin des Simples – Sunday 20 September at 10.00 am
As part of the Chablais Sustainable Food Festival, a tour of the Jardin des Simples will be offered, focusing on the domestic and economic uses of plants through the centuries.

- TALK: ‘The Forgotten Treasures of the Haut-Chablais’ – Sunday 20 September at 11.00 am
The Brevon Valley and the Aulps Valley are brimming with heritage sites typical of Haute-Savoie. This talk offers an opportunity to discover or rediscover iconic sites, ranging from legendary locations and places of worship to more contemporary gems.

WORKSHOP: ‘Sensitive Mapping of My Diet’ – Sunday 20 September at 11.00 am
Through an innovative concept, the CPIE Chablais-Léman is offering a reflective workshop to illustrate the links between what we eat and the impact of our consumption on the landscapes around us.

- TOUR: ‘The Abbey: a heritage site saved by a handful of men’ – Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September at 2.00 pm
Discover the history of the abbey, from its destruction to the present day. In recent times, the abbey church has been designated a Historic Monument, and the site was revitalised in 2007… Once in danger of being lost, the Abbey of Aulps tells its story here through the names of its saviours.

- LECTURE: ‘Photography Through the Ages’ – Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September at 3.30 pm
From the daguerreotype to digital photography, from chronophotography to contemporary experiments, discover the history and evolution of photography through a selection of works from the Micro-Folie Digital Museum.

- ‘FLORAIRE’ EXHIBITION by Aurélien Lepage – Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, 10.00–18.00
Come and admire the textile paintings by the Alsatian artist Aurélien Lepage. His creations evoke, in turn, illuminated manuscripts, ex-votos and embroidered tablecloths, through compositions featuring a multitude of colours and botanical motifs.
-READING CORNER - Sunday 20 September, 11am to 4pm
This welcoming and cosy space invites you to read and chat about food. A ‘literary siesta’, open to all, will take place from 2pm.

- MICRO-FOLIE DU HAUT-CHABLAIS / Digital Museum – Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, 11.00–17.00
Visit the Digital Museum at the Micro-Folie du Haut-Chablais, using immersive and virtual reality experiences. To mark the bicentenary of photography, the Micro-Folie invites you to explore a selection of works related to photography at your own pace.
- Aulps Abbey 3D - Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September
Discover the abbey as it was before its destruction in 1823. A unique experience to enjoy using virtual reality headsets or tablets available for hire at reception.
