The source of Evian water

Right in the heart of Évian-les-Bains, the Cachat spring has been flowing non-stop for over a century. At a constant 11.6°C, this pure water gushes out at the foot of the Buvette Cachat, in a setting steeped in history. This is the birthplace of Évian mineral water, renowned the world over for its purity and virtues.

Not to be missed An emblematic site

Listed as a historic monument, the Cachat spring is one of the mostemblematic placesin Évian-les-Bains. This is where the Evian water adventure began at the end of the 18th century. A true symbol of Evian’s spa heritage, it alone tells the story of the town. Freely accessible, the spring is also a pleasant stop-off for curious walkers or history buffs who want to connect with the origins of this world-famous water. A simple place, but full of memories.

Experience Miraculous water that became a legend

It was in 1789 that a harmless event marked the beginning of the reputation of Evian water. Jean Charles de Laizer, an aristocrat from Auvergne who had been exiled to Evian, quenched his thirst in Gabriel Cachat’s garden. Almost by chance, he discovered the beneficial effects of this spring water on his kidney problems. Cured in just a few weeks, he told people about it, arousing the interest of doctors. The water was soon scientifically analysed and recognised for its diuretic properties. It began to be prescribed as a cure, first locally and then far beyond. The Cachat spring became the focus of a growing spa craze, attracting the first spa-goers and laying the foundations for the spa vocation of Évian-les-Bains. Between empirical discovery, science and legend, Évian water became part of history. This founding story marks the beginning of an adventure that continues to this day, between well-being, health and the art of living.
