Mont Blanc tramway

The journey to the top

More than a train, a legend. The Tramway du Mont-Blanc, affectionately known as the TMB, is much more than just a means of transport. It’s an invitation to travel, a gateway to the high mountains, an exceptional route through forests, mountain pastures and glaciers. Here, the panorama becomes an emotion.

Not to be missed A legendary train in the heart of the Mont Blanc massif

The Tramway du Mont-Blanc, one of the highest cogwheel trains in France, links Saint-Gervais-les-Bains to the Nid d’Aigle, perched at an altitude of 2,372 metres. This unique journey offers a gradual immersion in the grandiose landscapes of the Mont-Blanc massif. As the train climbs, the panoramas change: alpine meadows, coniferous forests, torrents and scree slopes pass before your eyes, right up to the gates of the glacial world. Accessible in winter and summer alike, the Tramway is also the starting point for many hikes and climbs, including the Mont-Blanc Normal Route.

Experience An experience accessible in both summer and winter

The Tramway du Mont-Blanc follows the rhythm of the seasons, offering two distinct but equally memorable experiences. In winter, the train takes you to Bellevue, at an altitude of 1,794 m, in the heart of the Saint-Gervais-Les Houches ski area. This privileged access point delights skiers, snowshoers and walkers who come to enjoy the snow and the spectacular views of the peaks. In summer, the journey continues as far as the legendary Nid d’Aigle, the starting point for the normal route up Mont Blanc.

The site also offers superb walks and the chance to get close to the glaciers in complete safety. Whatever the season, the journey is an invitation to contemplate, to discover the fauna and flora of the Alps, and to get away from it all. The tramway is also an excellent way of making the mountains accessible to everyone, gently and effortlessly.

I've decided I'm coming! Ready for an unforgettable summer in Haute-Savoie?

Inspiration Heritage, nature and thrills

The Tramway du Mont-Blanc is a jewel of Savoie’s heritage. Inaugurated in 1909, it has retained its period charm while adapting to modern requirements. A journey on this century-old train is an immersion in history, combined with the rugged beauty of the landscapes it passes through. Along the way, passengers discover the wealth of Alpine ecosystems, from coniferous forests and flower-filled meadows to craggy crags and majestic glaciers.

It is also a strategic departure point for mountaineers, particularly those taking the classic Mont Blanc route. For photographers, hikers and lovers of wide open spaces, every stop is an invitation to contemplate. A genuine link between nature and culture, the tramway embodies the perfect balance between slow tourism, gentle adventure and thrills, in an exceptionally well-preserved setting in the heart of the Mont-Blanc region.
