In Thonon-les-Bains, the former casino in the spa park has been given a new lease of life under the name Villa Eugénie.
Why the new name? Villa Eugénie pays tribute to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, a leading figure of the Second Empire and fervent supporter of hydrotherapy. In 1860, the imperial couple was welcomed to Thonon, which was then in negotiations to become part of France. This was an opportunity for the sovereigns to encourage the development of the thermal waters of La Versoie.
The nod to history is therefore both historical and emotional: Villa Eugénie is rooted in Thonon's thermal identity, while affirming a new ambition for this iconic location, which hosts exhibitions and events and is home to a tea room run by two big names in French gastronomy.
