The church is under the patronage of Saint Maurice d'Agaune, captain of the Theban Legion, martyred at Octodure in Valais.
The Sciez church is dedicated to St. Maurice, captain of the Theban Legion, martyred in Valais in 286 AD. A chapel probably existed on this site, and was erected as a parish church in the 11th century by the canons of the Filly Abbey.
Over the centuries, the vicissitudes of history led to the church being rebuilt several times. The present Gothic-style building was begun in 1873 and completed in 1879, under the leadership of parish priest JORDAN.
The steeple of the old church (which contains two bronze bells dating from 1662 and classified as historic monuments) has been preserved, but the orientation of the building has been reversed.
At that time, Sciez had a population of 1842.
The church was surrounded by a cemetery.
Improvements and embellishments have been made ever since
The painting was restored in 1953, when Théophane DELALEX was the parish priest.
Pews, marble choir, sound system and gas heating were gradually added.
Of particular note are the side altars (Vierge and St François de Sales), with carved family scenes.
A few years ago, the painting was again restored.
