Dedicated to Saint James the Lesser, apostle. It is the only church in the diocese dedicated to the saint.
The church was built in the Sardinian neoclassical style between 1845 and 1846. It replaces an older building. Its only vestige is the base of the bell tower. The upper part is more recent, dating from 1876, in a style known as "pseudo-Romanesque". The interior of the church is sober. Colors, however, are bright and warm. The stained-glass windows come from the neighboring church in Perrignier. The interior decoration is from the same period as the construction. The only addition is the wooden altar, allowing mass to be held facing the congregation.
The wooden belfry houses three bells. The two larger ones bear the signatures of the Beauquis brothers from Quintal, often featured here, and the smaller one, by an unknown founder, will attract my full attention in the next few lines. The first two bells, "Marie-Louise" and "Françoise-Caroline" respectively, proudly bear the dates 1870 and 1879, i.e. just before and after the reconstruction of the tower that houses them. The first bell, weighing almost a ton, announces that it "marks the hours (of life), sings the days and mourns the sorrows". It quotes the mayor, Ruffet Claude, the parish priest, Rd Jacquier, and the president of the factory council, M. Bourgeois. Rd Favre, then parish priest of Praz-sur-Arly, is godfather, and Melle Verboud godmother. Its little sister, audible for the Angelus, is decorated with great care. Less talkative, she nonetheless declines to mention the names of the curé and the president of the fabrique, still in office, and the new mayor, Mr. Alexis Vuattoux. The Rd and Melle Chavanne sponsored it.
Facing it, the smallest bell sits proudly, defying the centuries. Dated August 1677, it was commissioned by parish priest Ducretet to replace an older bell. He himself sponsored it with Claude Cuilaz, giving it the name "Fabienne-Claude". More modest, the founder left us only his initials "C. V. ". For the time being, it is not possible to put a name to his identity... The bell, mute for decades and once used for the tocsin, it was electrified at the end of 2017. The first official flight took place on Easter Day 2018. From now on, she will occasionally sing with her big sisters on special occasions.
