Behind the beauty and serenity of Abondance Abbey lies a painstaking and demanding process of conservation, research and restoration. How does one maintain a centuries-old monument? What research is being carried out to better understand its materials, paintings and architecture? What considerations guide the development and enhancement projects?
This tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at a living monument. From recent work on the monastery’s roof structure to studies currently underway – including climate studies and analyses of the paintings and sculptures – you will discover the scientific, heritage and technical challenges involved in preserving the site.
The tour will also present the comprehensive programme for the redevelopment, restoration and enhancement of the abbey, organised into four phases, as well as the launch of the first stage: the creation of a new visitor centre, accessibility improvements and the development of the surrounding area.
