The place du marché or market square is the economic heart of the medieval city. It is located right above the castle and close to the shore where the boats land on.
As early as the 13th century, there is a hall covered with wooden slats, the "scindules", a kind of scrap wood that makes it vulnerable to fires and gales. It will be rebuilt several times. Nearby, a large stone hollowed out of various cavities serves as a measure for the goods. Agents of the count circulate between the benches to levy Leiden, a tax on certain products, such as meat and wheat. The square is decorated in its center with a fountain with a wooden basin, near which is the pillory where criminals are exposed to the eyes of the population.
