Pilgrims will be delighted to rediscover this place of meditation in a magnificent setting: the chapel is located on the Boisy hill, 2 km from the main town of Sciez.
The first chapel was built in the 13th century by the monks of Filly, but the present building dates back to the 15th century. A monk from the Filly Abbey is said to have been responsible for the statue of Mary, a medieval work carved from oak.
The monks regularly came to the chapel to celebrate religious services, following a recently rediscovered path known as the "Chemin des Moines" (Monks' Path), which runs from the Marignan basin to the chapel. The pilgrimage to Notre Dame de Chavannex brings together some 200 participants every August. Suspended for a time during the 39-45 war, the pilgrimage was revived on the initiative of parish priest Delalex.
