Rue Chante-Coq, 74200 Thonon-les-Bains
In one of the oldest streets of Thonon, stands the oldest house of the city, having once belonged to the powerful Guillet de Monthoux family, whose coat of arms still adorns the facade today...
Long before the construction of the Visitation convent in the 17th century, this street led to a small field called "Corre" or "Court". From "champ Court", the name became "Chancot", then "Chante-Coq" in the 19th century.

Even older is the Guillet de Monthoux house, located in this same street, since its construction dates back to 1480. Its door is surmounted by the family coat of arms: three crowned leopards' heads. In the basement, there would have been a door leading to a subterranean passage which allowed to reach the castle of the city... by horse!

The first Guillet de Monthoux established in Thonon in the 15th century, Pierre, was cupbearer (officer in charge of serving drinks to an important person) of Duke Louis of Savoy. In the 19th century, this family died out with the successive disappearances of the four Guillet daughters, daughters of General Othon Laurent.

The current facade of the Guillet de Monthoux house is the result of work carried out during the renovation of the rue Chante-Coq in the 1990s.
