At the end of the 19th century, the Touring Club de France, originally created to develop bicycle tourism, began to encourage automobile tourism. It favored the improvement and the signposting of roads and militated for the comfort of inns. He set up signs and orientation tables and laid out many tourist routes himself, including the Alpine Route.
