Follow Jérome Phalippou through the Abbey’s hidden corners. Through his sketches, he has captured the unseen to offer you a poetic stroll. An invitation to slow down and rediscover the monument from a fresh perspective.
From 27 June to 27 September, Abondance Abbey invites you to enjoy a unique artistic experience.
For several months, Jérome Phalippou, a comic artist and illustrator, has explored every nook and cranny of our historic building. Between two pillars, around a corner of an archway or deep within the ‘forest’ of the roof trusses, he has sought out the invisible. Armed with his sketchbook and a keen eye, he “sketched” the Abbey, capturing its tiniest details and most hidden corners, bringing them to life using various media (pencil, ink, watercolour…).
The result? A series of drawings imbued with finesse, patience and precision, reminding us that history is not only found in books: it unfolds before our eyes, in the stone and the shifting shadows.
More than just an exhibition, “Une Abbaye à Croquer” is an invitation to slow down. Let yourself be carried away by a leisurely stroll as you explore. As you rediscover these details brought to light by the artist, you will see that the Abbey has much to reveal to you.
Fancy extending the experience? Don’t just stand and gaze: grab a piece of paper and a pencil. Settle down peacefully and try, yourself, to capture a curve, a shadow or an architectural detail that has caught your eye. After all, there’s no better way to make a place your own than by sketching its outlines.
Come and share this moment of simple poetry and rediscover Abondance Abbey as you’ve never seen it before.
