Here a bear, looking friendly; there a snail's head, antennae raised; there again, an owl in the rainbow night...
Although the artist loves animals, he is not an animal sculptor in the traditional sense. He plays with illusions, repurposes materials, and defies expectations. Wood, his medium of choice, is combined with rustic cement in the style of rockeries and techniques derived from arts and crafts. Laurent Le Deunff cultivates this discrepancy between the object represented and the material it is made of, revealing the poetry of the modest and the nobility of the raw.
His keen sense of observation and his taste for surprise inform both his sculptures and his drawings. Together, they compose a sensitive bestiary, sometimes funny, always delicately strange.
This exhibition invites us to look differently, to allow ourselves to be surprised, and to reconnect with a simple and joyful form of wonder.
