The mountains, and particularly the high mountains, have been a field of observations and experiments for naturalist scientists over the centuries.
Their work in the Alps will be discussed, from the Renaissance to the present day, in various fields of natural science, including geology, glaciology, climatology, botany, zoology, and medical sciences. Whether specialists or more generalists, they have contributed to enriching human knowledge.
