"The Assy crypt: a space for experimentation and a forgotten witness to the revival of sacred art."

Art historian Marie Vuillemin dedicated her Master 2 thesis (EPHE) to the crypt of the Plateau d'Assy church (1937-1962), a little-known space that was a veritable laboratory for the revival of sacred art. It reveals this exceptional ensemble - stained glass by Marguerite Huré, mosaics by Théodore Strawinsky, altar painting by Ladislas Kijno, missal by Odette Ducarre and Robert Morel, ensemble by Claude Mary - an essential witness to the bold vision of Père Couturier and Canon Devémy.

How to get to the church:
From Annecy or Geneva: Take the A40 towards Chamonix, exit n°21 "Passy" and follow signs for Plateau d'Assy.
From Chamonix: Take exit n°21 "Passy-Centre" and follow signs for Plateau d'Assy.

By coach:
Drop-off is at the Place Tobé bus stop, about 100m after the church. For long-term coach parking, we recommend the Promenade Marie Curie parking lot.
Please note: for coaches, GPS may recommend an unsuitable route. We recommend you follow the signs for the "Plateau d'Assy" departmental road.
